Credit card closed with a balance: what happens next?
A closed credit card balance still has to be paid. Learn what changes after closure, how interest and payments work, and which records to keep.

Short answer
Closing the account stops new purchases, but it does not cancel the debt. Keep making at least the required payment, check whether interest continues under your agreement, and monitor statements until the issuer reports a zero balance.
Closure stops purchases, not the debt
An issuer can close the credit line while leaving the repayment terms in place. You cannot make new purchases, but the remaining balance still appears on statements and remains due.
Keep the issuer's closure notice and download recent statements before online access changes. Those records help you confirm the balance, rate, fees, and final payment history.
Keep paying by each due date
Pay at least the minimum shown on the statement by the due date. Paying more reduces the balance faster and may reduce future interest, depending on the agreement.
Do not stop autopay until you confirm the final payment has cleared. If the issuer disables autopay after closure, set up another payment method before the next due date.
Watch the credit report after payoff
The account may appear as closed with a balance while you repay it. After the final payment, check that the issuer reports a zero balance and an accurate payment history.
Dispute a factual error with the credit bureau and the company that supplied the information. A dispute should identify the specific inaccurate field and include supporting records.
Move subscriptions and pending transactions
Update merchants that used the closed card. A merchant may still submit a recurring or delayed transaction, but you should not rely on the issuer accepting it after closure.
Track refunds, disputes, and pending charges until they resolve. Ask the issuer how it will deliver a credit if a refund creates a negative balance after the account closes.

Frequently asked questions
Do I still owe a balance after the issuer closes my card?
Yes. The closure ends access to new credit but does not erase the existing balance or payment obligations.
Can interest continue on a closed credit card?
Interest may continue under the card agreement while a balance remains. Review each statement and contact the issuer if the rate or fees do not match your agreement.
