U.S. Bank can act when an account becomes inactive

U.S. Bank's cardmember agreement lists inactivity among the events that can place an account in default. The agreement allows the bank to cancel an account or suspend access to new credit under the stated terms.

The agreement does not give cardholders a fixed number of inactive months. Your own cardmember agreement controls, so review the copy issued for your account.

U.S. Bank recommends a recurring bill for an unused card

U.S. Bank's consumer guidance suggests putting a small recurring bill on a card when you want to reduce the chance of an inactivity closure. The bank uses a streaming subscription as one example.

The purchase must reach the card account. A payment on another account or a login to online banking does not create a purchase on this card.

Use a schedule that leaves room for failures

A purchase every three to four months gives you time to catch a declined or canceled subscription before a long inactive stretch develops. U.S. Bank does not guarantee that any cadence will prevent closure.

Use statement-balance autopay, then review each statement. A small charge can still create interest or a late fee if you miss the payment.

Call promptly after a closure or warning

Use the number on the back of the card or your statement if U.S. Bank warns that it may close the account. Ask which transaction would satisfy the notice and confirm the deadline.

After a closure, ask whether U.S. Bank can reinstate the original account. A new application may create a new account and does not restore the old opening date or credit line.
