Can a closed credit card still be charged?

Understand pending, recurring, adjusted, and unauthorized transactions that may appear after a card account closes.

Short answer

New purchases should not rely on a closed account, but transactions submitted earlier, adjusted charges, recurring bills, fees, or interest can still appear. Review every statement and contact the issuer about any charge you do not recognize or believe is wrong.

Separate new and earlier transactions

A closed line should not be used for a fresh purchase. Pending or delayed merchant submissions can still reach the account after the closure date.

Expect account-level amounts

Interest, annual fees, refunds, dispute adjustments, and other account entries may appear even when purchasing access has ended. Compare each item with the agreement and prior statements.

Move recurring merchants

Update bills to an open payment method. Contact merchants directly because a failed payment can create a late fee, lapse, or collection issue outside the card account.

Challenge incorrect charges

Use the issuer's dispute channel and keep records of the closure date, merchant contact, and transaction. Continue making required payments on undisputed amounts.

Frequently asked questions

Can a pending transaction post after closure?

It can. A transaction authorized before closure may post later, and some merchants submit final adjustments after the first authorization.

Does closing a card cancel subscriptions?

No. Closing the payment account does not cancel your contract with the merchant. Update or cancel each service directly.
